The Municipal Gallery of Chania

The Municipal Gallery of Chania is hosted in a three-story building, built in 1910 and is part of a building complex. It is a typical example of Neoclassic Greek architecture of commercial and industrial buildings of the late 19th and early 20th century. The walls are made of stone not covered with masonry. The front wall of the building, on Halidon street is constructed with stones of equal size, beautifully sculptured. The aesthetic result is rather impressive. The openings on the ground floor follow the rules of the commercial Neo-classical buildings. The openings of the 1st floor are supported by austere uniform pseudo-pillars. Their ornate heads support the cornice, lightly decorated with reliefs. Its construction works were completed in 2001 and the gallery is open since 2003. It is legal entity of the public law is affiliated with the Municipality of Chania. From the time of its foundation until today, the gallery has hosted 21 exhibitions with works of recognized artists, while at the same time it has presented important publication works. All the important exhibitions of the gallery are accompanied by educational programs for children and adults.
The aim of the gallery is to actively contribute to the cultural vision of the Municipality of Chania, which in turn contributes to the preservation of the gallery and to the promotion of its goals.
