Egyptian Period (1831 - 1841)
After the end of the revolution, Crete
was assigned to the Regent of Egypt, Mehmet Ali, until 1841. During the Egyptian
occupation, the breakwaters and the famous Egyptian lighthouse were constructed
in the port of Chania.
The Egyptian administration
published the first Cretan newspaper in Chania, "Vakai Girit" ("The Voice of
Crete"), in both languages, Greek and Arabic.
