The Philological Association “Chrysostomos”

The Philological Association "Chrysostomos" is the oldest intellectual and cultural association -not only in the city of Chania, but also in the entire island. It was founded in 1899 and initially it was preoccupied with issues of a wider social and educational framework.
When social welfare became a sector of the Greek state, the association focused on intellectual and cultural activities. The contribution of the association in the intellectual, social and cultural development of the city is noteworthy.

The association is historically connected with the first years of the Cretan State (1898 - 1913), a crucial historical period in the modern history of Chania, Crete and Greece. The building of the association is across the Municipal Library and is a typical example of neoclassic architecture in Crete.  In its excellent renovated space, numerous speeches and events dedicated to famous personalities in the sector of philology and arts are organized, as well as musical performances and art exhibitions.

The Philological Association "Chrysostomos" is closely connected with the institution of Cretological Conferences, the most important international scientific organization in Crete that is active in the sector of cretological studies. It is conducted every 5 years in different prefectures of the island and it gathers a large number of scientists (over 700) from all over the world. The city of Chania has hosted the 2nd and 6th Cretological conference in 1966 and in 1986. According to the decision of the plenary council of the 8th conference in Elounda in 2001, the Philological Association "Chrysostomos" was responsible for organization of the 9th Cretological conference that took place in Chania in 2006, after 20 years.
