The breakwaters are based on a line of reefs that made access to the port difficult. In about the center of the breakwaters, there is the rampart of "Aghios Nikolaos tou Molou".
The rampart covered the long distance until the entrance to the port, and was used to protect the port along with the fortress of "Firka".
