The Nautical Museum of Crete

The Nautical
Museum of Crete is located
at the entrance of the historical fortress "Firka". It was founded in 1973 in order
to promote the nautical traditions and history of the island. The Museum
cooperates and interacts with other Nautical Museums in Greece and abroad.
The permanent exhibition
includes 2.500 items, such as relics, objects found in the bottom of the sea, paintings,
maps, photographs, models of ships, nautical equipment ect. The exhibits are organized
in units, in chronological order from the Copper Age until today.
There is also
a special exhibition of the sea environment, with a rich collection of shells from
different parts of the world.
A great vision of the Nautical Museum of Crete was realized
with the construction of a Minoan Ship, based
on a research program of experimental archeology, with the use of original
materials, tools and procedures of the time it refers to (15th century
BC).
For this difficult project, the Nautical Museum of Crete cooperated with the
Institute of Research of Ancient Marine Architecture
and Technology "NAVADOMOS", which was responsible for the research and
direction of the project. It is the main exhibit of the Museum for the
projection of Cretan culture.
An important development step for the Nautical Museum
is the recent assignment of one of the Venetian "Neoria" (dockyard) by the
Ministry of Culture, for the creation of a permanent exhibition of ancient and
traditional marine architecture.
The educational programs of the museum are designed
for different people of all ages, including young children and children with
special needs.
