Prophet Elias - The Graves of the Venizelos Family

The temple of "Profitis Elias" (Prophet Elias) is located on the position "Froudia" and was built during the Venetian period. Initially, only the smaller south aisle of the temple was built, dedicated to Prophet Elisaios.
During the 16th century, the larger temple of Prophet Elias was added after the construction of an arched opening on the original north wall. The temple was destroyed during the bombing attacks of the Great Powers and was later reconstructed. During the last revolution (1897), the Cretan Revolutionary Army Camp was founded in the area of Prophet Elias and great battles were fought there between the European powers, the Turkish army and the Greek army.
Eleftherios Venizelos played an important role during the international negotiations and proved to be one of the brightest Greek politicians, and he is rightly called "the Ethnarch". Many members of his family also had a bright political career.

In a special area next to the temple of Prophet Elias, there are the graves of the Ethnarch, Eleftherios Venizelos and of his son, Sophocles Venizelos, the leader of the Liberal Party.
A bit further, there is the statue of Spyros Kagiales who represents the courage and heroism of the Cretan fighters during the revolutions and struggles for freedom.
