"The Identity of the Mayor"
Ioannis Perakis


The mayor of Souda, Ioannis Perakis, was born in Souda in 1944. He graduated from high school in Chania and he received his BA degree in the Physics Department of the Physics- Mathematics School of the University of Athens. He continued his studies in the same university and received his Master's Degree (MSc) in Electronic Automatics. During his university years he became actively involved with syndicalism, gaining important experiences for his later interest in politics and social issues. He was a member of the administrative council of the Master Students of Electronics Association, as a secretary in the first year and as a treasurer in the second year. After graduating from the university, he worked as a secretary of the Association of Physics Research and Application. He is a member of the Grek Physicians Union and a member of the Scientific Association of Physics Research and Application.

 

In1976 he worked in middle education institutions, in different manager positions. From1981 until 1985 he worked as a professor in the department of Electronics of the Technical School (TEI) of Chania. He was a member of the Prefecture Committee for Public Education and a representative of Technical Education and of the Technical School (TEI) of Chania. He was a founding member of the Cultural Association of Souda and its President from 1982 to1986. In1990, he is dedicated to the Local Administration and is elected as the first Municipal Counselor. He was the vice mayor in 1991 and from July 1992 until 1998 he was the mayor of Souda, as it was shaped then. He had a vision to unify Souda, Tsikalaria and Aptera, and he fought to realize this vision in the framework of the program "Ioannis Kapodistrias". In1998 he was elected as the mayor of the new Capodistrian Municipality.

 

In 2003, he was elected as the President of the Local Union of Municipalities and Communities of the Chania Prefecture from 1994 to 2002. He is a warm supporter of inter-municipal cooperation and he was a leading force for the founding of the Union for the Management of Solid Waste. He is also a representative of the local administration from the position of the vice President of the Union of Local Municipalities and Communities of Crete Coalition from1994 until today. All these years he has been fighting in an organized manner to solve the problems of the region, focusing on the healthy development of the municipality. He is married with the philologist Maria Maraki and they have two children, Christina and Giorgos.
